Proud
Beneficiary of the '08 Threadhead Raffle
"If only one child becomes interested in music and chooses a drum over a drug,
picks up a trumpet instead of a gun, our efforts will not be
in vain."
The
Threadheads are the denizens of the chat board on the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival
website. These 'jazzfest' addicts, who hail from all over the globe,
chat year round and meet up during the 10 days of "Fest". After Hurricane Katrina, the Threadheads were united by a strong desire to
give back to their favorite city that had brought them so much joy
but now has so many needs. The latest Threadhead Give Back Project, in conjunction with the anti-violence organization SilenceIsViolence, is Fest4Kidz.
SilenceIsViolence is
an anti-violence campaign that was founded following the December 28
murder of Dinerral Shavers and the January 4 murder of Helen Hill.
Dinerral and Helen were beloved friends, neighbors, and artists of
the Bywater-Marigny district in New Orleans. The organization seeks
to stem the tide of violence through various means including community
outreach programs. One such program, aimed at the youth of New Orleans,
is a free music clinic offered each Tuesday at Sound Cafe, 2700 Chartres
Street, for New Orleans children of all ages. The clinics, led by local
professional musicians, include both vocal and instrumental training.
As
part of the Threadheads "Give Back" philosophy, Fest4Kidz was organized to raise money to sponsor "A Day at Fest" for these students and their chaperones and has expanded to sponsor the clinics
themselves and even provide donated instruments.
Won't
you join us in supporting the work of SilenceIsViolence by encouraging
the continued growth of the New Orleans music culture while inspiring
the younger generation to keep the music alive? |
